Mario vs Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars is Cross-Buy

Although it has been somewhat overlooked in recent years, the Mario vs. Donkey Kong has become somewhat of a flagship series for the eShop, and it’s about to break new ground (for Nintendo at least) – the latest title will be the first (well, second in Europe) cross-buy eShop title.

Cross buy is a already a familiar concept for playstation owners, but the feature has been somewhat absent across the Wii U and 3DS, but that seems to be changing. Over on Sony’s platforms, purchase of a game on PS3, PS4 or PS Vita often unlocks it for use on all three systems, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars will follow a similar pattern. However, for once Nintendo’s lack of an accounts based system for download games is a plus, because rather than automatically unlocking the game, Nintendo plan to provide a download code to purchasers. Expect to see many of these on eBay in the near future…

As for the game itself, Tipping Stars follows the template laid out by its predecessors well – once again, the aim is to guide mini toys to the exit via simple touch controls. Also returning is the level editor which has got a significant upgrade – while you can still share your creations online, players of your levels can now rate them by tipping you with stars. I see what you’re doing there Nintendo…

Stars can be used to buy new parts for levels, with the idea being that the most creative designers will get more parts to use, hence enabling them to create better levels. Sounds a bit like the rich will get richer then, but there you go.

Tipping Stars is out on the 5th March in North America and 20th March in Europe, exclusively on the eShop.

Xenoblade Chronicles X Coming in 2015

Fans of open world RPG Xenoblade are in for a good year – not only are they getting a handheld 3DS version of the Wii original, but there is also a sequel on its way to Wii U (imaginatively subtitled ‘X’). We’ve heard plenty about the game thus far with a strong showing at E3 last year, and the new trailer only reinforces the hype, with a beautiful crisp open world and the ability to do some silly jumping. Mario might have competition on his hands…

There’s not really any new information, but who cares when you’ve got a trailer that beautiful. Will you be picking up Xenoblade Chronicles X?

Wii Games Coming to Wii U Virtual Console

Good news: Wii U is getting brand new additions to its Virtual Console! Sadly though, if you’re hoping for Gamecube games, you’ll have to hope on. Nintendo have skipped an entire generation, and are going to be offering Wii games for download from the eShop from today.

Although the Wii U is backwards compatible with disc based Wii games, the process is a little fiddly as you have to put the Wii U into Wii mode, which means that the pro controller and GamePad physical controls cannot be used. The great news is that these new downloads will install on the main Wii U menu, and if the original editions supported the classic controller then they may be playable with the Wii U Gamepad.

Confirmed games for the service are as follows:

Super Mario Galaxy – Out Now

Donkey Kong Country Returns (Europe only) and Punch Out!! (North America only) – Out 22/1

Metroid Prime Trilogy – Out 29/1

All of the above games will be available at half price for the first week they’re on sale, and Nintendo are also planning more releases with Kirby’s Adventure, Punch Out!!, Pandora’s Tower and Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Skies confirmed for Europe. Regular pricing will be around the $20/€20/£18 mark.

Unfortunately there’s no word of an upgrade service for owners of the original discs, and this seems unlikely to change as Nintendo have said these downloads are aimed at people who missed out on the games first time around. Will you be downloading any Wii games?

RUMOUR – HMV to Phase Out Gaming?

UK entertainment retailer, HMV, have been a bit up and down over the past couple of years. In 2013, the company entered administration which forced the company to close several stores and make several employees redundant. However, they quickly got back on their feet and were even able to reopen some of their closed stores.

More recently however, in early 2014, they ended their trade-in programme for video games, which meant they could no longer purchase used games from customers. Unfortunately, it seems they may start to phase out gaming altogether in the near future.
