Unless you’ve already received your copy, there is only one day left until Super Smash Bros. launches on Nintendo Switch. Even then, it may only be a mere matter of hours! It has been a long week, but we are nearly there. Unfortunately, it does mean this will be the final edition of our countdown to smash.

To celebrate one more day (more or less) until launch, I’ve written an open letter to Masahiro Sakurai, as well as the rest of the team behind Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Check it out after the break!

Dear Masahiro Sakurai and everyone else who could make this series possible,

I’ve re-written this one line several times, simply because it’s fairly difficult to emphasise my appreciation for all the hard work and dedication that go into these games. I could only imagine how difficult it is to develop a new Smash Bros. entry.

Forget about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Super Smash Bros. obviously takes the crown for the most ambitious crossover. The franchise has really come a long way. To think that the very first Super Smash Bros. game for the N64 started off with a roster of 12 characters. Now there are more than 70 different characters, some of which aren’t even first party. The fact that you have been able to use the licences for external characters is brilliant.

The Smash series is different for me. I’ve never been all that interested in fighting games, they never really grabbed my attention. There’s just something about playing as some of my beloved Nintendo characters though that makes the series stand out to me. Even when I was younger, and had no idea how to play, I still found it awesome.

I have many memories of playing smash throughout my lifetime. My older brother used to always hand my ass to me as Kirby on the original N64 title… how the tables have turned now. I still remember all those rainy days skirmishing on Rainbow Ride in Melee, I may have borrowed my copy from a friend who forgot I have done so. Getting Brawl on release day still feels like yesterday. I ended up spending hours into the night with my friend on that one, and that Subspace Emissary was epic! Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was also brilliant. I often got friends together in a lecture theatre for 8-Player Smash.

Smash is a fantastic community building game that can appeal to many different gamers. Some may just have fun screwing about with the different chaotic items and zany rules, while others thrive off serious competition. Either way, the majority of the community are awesome people. Take me and my one friend for example. He’s quite a serious smash player yet I prefer to play more casually. We both will often play against each other, and though I would often loose, none of us really care. In fact, he would sometimes give me tips and even praise me if he thinks I am starting to do well.

It is a shame that there is still a community into leaking and pre-release datamining, it truly is unfair on all of your hard work. I do hope however, that you have stayed strong during those times, the majority are always willing to wait patiently and play the game legitimately.

I truly look forward to delving into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tomorrow, and I hope that you are all able to take a well deserve break very soon, especially you Mr. Sakurai!

Kind Regards,
Leon Fletcher

I am a huge Nintendo fan, hence why NintyBuzz exists. I especially love all things Zelda and Metroid. NintyBuzz was started by me back in the Summer of 2014, it started out mainly as a hobby, though the site has gradually grown, and I hope it grows for many years to come!
