Recently, Nintendo made a statement that they haven’t finished updating Mario Kart 8 Deluxe quite yet. The company proved that they were dead serious when they dropped the new Breath of the Wild update a couple weeks ago. This got me thinking though, we’ve yet to receive any additional premium content for Deluxe compared to the original Wii U version.

You could say that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe already has so much content, so why do we need more. Quite simply put, we’re a greedy bunch, and savour the idea for more content when we’ve already logged 100 or so hours on the title.

So what other ventures could Mario Kart 8 Deluxe make? Find out some of our ideas, after the break!

Sheikah Cup

Let’s face it, the addition of Breath of the Wild Link and the Master Cycle Zero has only whetted our appetite for more Zelda in Mario Kart… heck, we may as well call it Zelda Kart, but that doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.

Just imagine the different locales you could race through in Hyrule from Breath of the Wild. Speed through the dilapidated ruins on the Great Plateu, dive down the refreshing waterfalls of Zora’s Domain, race the sand seals of Gerudo Desert, or get chased by guardians patrolling Hyrule Castle. There’s your Sheikah Cup right there.

If you really want to get ambitious, this pack could also include a new battle stage set somewhere like the ruins of Hyrule Castle. Just imagine playing a match of Balloon Battle with the added hazard of Guardian fire. You could even replace the Shine Sprite in Shine Thief with the Triforce on this stage. Talk about some legendary DLC.

Moon Cup

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker got the Super Mario Odyssey, so why not Mario Kart 8 Deluxe too! You could, for example, dive through the cascading falls of the Cascade Kingdom, swerve round the advanced Bound Bound Bowl Grand Prix of the Snow Kingdom, speed through the town of Tostarena more quickly than a Jaxi in the Sand Kingdom, and experience zero-g thrills of the Moon Kingdom. Talk about a globe trotting Grand Prix.

Not enough for ya? Well, I don’t think this city permits explosives, but you could play a round of Bob-Omb Blast in the Metro Kingdom as a battle stage. Who knows, maybe Mayor Pauline could join in as a playable character. Speaking of playable characters, surely there’s enough room for the Broodals too!

Mission Mode

What if one piece of DLC provided us with a new mode instead of tracks or characters? To me, it would be the perfect chance to bring back mission mode from the DS and Wii entries. This mode alone would definitely convince me to come back to the game on a more dedicated level.

Obviously you would have challenges like beating a character in a race, collecting a certain amount of coins, drive through numbered gates etc. but I have idea for some of the more zany challenges too. You could have a scavenger hunt for Power Moons in different locales where you are given a hint for each moon, you could have a small game of mini golf in the karts, balloon battle survival, and bosses to name a few.

It would be quite cool to have a base set of challenges, but also newly updated challenges too, similar to Mario Kart Wii’s version. This would definitely prolong the life of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe until the next entry is ready on the New Nintendo Switch XL.

Mario Kart Royale

Besides Fortnite, Nintendo hasn’t really talked about the Battle Royale archetype too much… no, I don’t mean Kirby Battle Royale, completely different thing. What if Nintendo were ready to enter the Battle Royale genre, and their first dive into it was with Mario Kart. It may sound silly, but hear me out.

Imagine a massive game of Balloon Battle, with about 30 or so players on a massive battle stage, however you only receive three sets of three balloons. This means that once you’ve been knocked out three times, you’re out. Just imagine the chaos that would ensue… obviously this would be the good kind of chaos like that scene from 28 Weeks Later with the Benny Hill theme dubbed over it (that works, right?).

I think a mode like this would definitely be interesting for Mario Kart and possibly reinvent Balloon Battle in a way (obviously making sure the original Balloon Battle stays). Would the Switch be able to run something like this though?

Okay, so maybe we are being a bit greedy, but those are just simply ideas which we thought were pretty cool, and completely understand that these are very unlikely to be anything more than that… obviously. What do you think of our ideas though? Have any others? Tell us in the comments below!

I am a huge Nintendo fan, hence why NintyBuzz exists. I especially love all things Zelda and Metroid. NintyBuzz was started by me back in the Summer of 2014, it started out mainly as a hobby, though the site has gradually grown, and I hope it grows for many years to come!
