Welcome, foolish mortals, to the first edition of Weekend NintyBeats! Music plays such a huge part within Nintendo games to make them truly remarkable and memorable. To show our appreciation an love of the music, every Friday we shall share a selection of tracks from various Nintendo games, new and old.

What’s a better week to start the show off than Halloween week which will be filled with music from beyond the grave.

Creepies and crawlies, toads in a pond; let there be music, from regions beyond [the break]!

Dark Rooms ~ Luigi’s Mansion ~ Gamecube (2001)

Our tour begins here in this mansion… a mansion that was won by Luigi… in a competition he never entered! Luigi’s Mansion first appeared on the Gamecube and was a rather strange game at the time. This was because it didn’t star the red plumber Mario, but rather his brother, Luigi. I myself have very fond memories playing through Luigi’s Mansion, easily getting creeped out by the various ghosts you had to catch. Though the game had a very limited soundtrack, the song you hear the most does so well in setting the creepy tone and atmosphere, there isn’t really any need for a huge soundtrack!

River Twygx Bed ~ Super Paper Mario ~ Wii (2007) – SPOILERS PRESENT

Paper Mario games generally have a very light-hearted tone to them, sure Super Paper Mario has slightly darker motives, but even then it was generally lighthearted… that’s until you venture into the land people go after their game has ended, The Underwhere. If you happen to take a dip into the River Twygx, the atmosphere depresses even further. The music is like you are in a nightmare and there are hands which will try to drag you to further depths… you almost wish you were back in The Underwhere…

Creepy Castle ~ Donkey Kong 64 ~ N64 (1999)

No matter what anyone says, one of my all time favourite video game composers is Grant Kirkhope [nearly on par with Koji Kondo], as he has made the music to some of my favourite games from my childhood. They all seem to be lighthearted yet it captures the atmosphere perfectly, and the theme from Creepy Castle is no exception to this. It sets a very gloomy and creepy atmosphere, especially when the spooky sounds and organ comes into play. It’s worth checking out the other variations, as they are even creepier!

Shadow Temple ~ The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time ~ N64 (1998)

The Zelda series is full of scary dungeons [it’s very difficult to stop it dominating this list] but the one area which really tops it off for me is the Shadow Temple. It’s really like you have entered the realm of the dead, and the music makes you feel so tense. Is there a Stalfo awaiting your presence? Perhaps there is a Wallmaster waiting to jump on you?

Unfortunately that is all the time we have for tonight, but be sure to hurry back for another spooky edition of Weekend NintyBeats. If you have any suggestions for next week, be sure to jot them down in the comments below and we might decide to use it!

Happy Hauntings!

I am a huge Nintendo fan, hence why NintyBuzz exists. I especially love all things Zelda and Metroid. NintyBuzz was started by me back in the Summer of 2014, it started out mainly as a hobby, though the site has gradually grown, and I hope it grows for many years to come!
