NintyBeats – Valentine’s Day Special 2021

February 2021’s addition of NintyBeats is yet another opportunity to share some Nintendo music that I truly love. In past versions of these features, I have written about music from some of the first Nintendo games I was introduced to, music that had a romance theme to them, and my favourite music from the Animal Crossing and Metroid series. You might be wondering if there are even more themes that I love, and the answer would be: of course!

Today I want to share an additional four themes that reaffirm my love for video games from Nintendo.

REVIEW – Paper Mario: The Origami King

To unfold and fold,
An entire world torn apart,
Paper puns are hard.

Ahem, while not the most eloquent haiku ever written, there are more pressing matters at hand, such as the unfolding of the Mushroom Kingdom itself in Paper Mario’s latest barmy adventure for Nintendo Switch.

Has Paper Mario: The Origami King got what it takes to uncrumple our Sticker Star tainted hearts, or is it better off chucking into the waste paper basket? Find out in our review after the break!

I am a huge Nintendo fan, hence why NintyBuzz exists. I especially love all things Zelda and Metroid. NintyBuzz was started by me back in the Summer of 2014, it started out mainly as a hobby, though the site has gradually grown, and I hope it grows for many years to come!

Paper Mario – A look back at the series so far

Paper Mario is a series which launched almost two decades ago on the Nintendo 64 and has since spawned six mainline entries, the latest of which, Paper Mario: The Origami King, is set to release next month on the Nintendo Switch. Yet there are many, myself included, who feel that this series has struggled to recapture its early magic with more recent entries. So, what exactly was it that made the original game so special? To answer that, we need to take a stroll back down memory lane to the Year 2000, when the Nokia 3310 was at the peak of mobile technology and Anne Robinson was instilling fear in contestants on the Weakest Link.

I have been gaming for 30 years, starting mostly with PC Gaming, where I developed a penchant for classic point and click games. Over time I discovered Nintendo, starting with the Game Boy and the Super Mario Land games. Here, my love for Nintendo grew as I discovered many of their other franchises, from Zelda to Pokémon. These days I play a bit of everything but Nintendo and their unique creativity always keeps me coming back for more.

New Paper Mario: The Origami King Details Emerge

With nearly a month until Paper Mario: The Origami King launches for Nintendo Switch, more details about the upcoming title have been announced. King Olly has commandeered Peach’s Castle in an attempt to fold up the world. Binding the castle, massive streamers are sprawled across the land and it’s up to Mario to unravel them at their source.

The new trailer has introduced some new unlikely companions, including Bobby, a Bob-Omb suffering from amnesia, and Olivia, King Olly’s kind-hearted sister. The trailer also went in-depth on how the new ring-based battles will work. Mario can rotate rings and slide columns to try and bunch up enemies before the timer runs out. You’ll then have to decide which of your weapons to use to make the biggest impact.

Taking on the big bad bosses of the world, aptly named ‘The Legion of Stationery’, takes a slightly different approach. This time you’ll have to move the rings and columns to build a path for Mario to reach the boss in the centre. Having trouble? Depending on how many Toads you have rescued during your adventure may affect how much support they’ll provide in-battle. Always worth helping a little guy in need!

Check out the new trailer below, as well as a press release and gallery after the break!
