Feature: The Legacy of PokƩmon

Preface

For over twenty-three years, the PokĆ©mon franchise has been a constant and welcomed presence in my life. This massively successful series started in 1996 in Japan, with the release of PokĆ©mon Red & PokĆ©mon Green for the Nintendo Game Boy by a company called Game Freak. Its huge financial success and popularity eventually found its way overseas, finally reaching Europe in 1999. It continued to dominate the lives of children and their parents’ wallets with an obscene amount of content and merchandise, such as toys, animation, trading cards, and video games. At twelve years old, it was impossible for me to avoid the craze that had captured the attention and imagination of kids throughout the world. Here, I will attempt to recount my own memories of the PokĆ©mon series, and share highlights from my personal journey through a franchise that means so much to me.

Nintendo’s Forgotten Franchises – Kururin

My first forgotten franchises article extolled the virtues of Nintendoā€™s wonderful Wave Race series, a franchise which is long overdue a comeback. The logical next step in this series of articles would then be to continue looking back at Nintendoā€™s other forgotten sporting franchises ā€“ the thrilling, off-road racer, Excitebike or perhaps their exhilarating snowboarding series, 1080. Who needs logic though? Instead, letā€™s take a look back at the Kururin series!

I have been gaming for 30 years, starting mostly with PC Gaming, where I developed a penchant for classic point and click games. Over time I discovered Nintendo, starting with the Game Boy and the Super Mario Land games. Here, my love for Nintendo grew as I discovered many of their other franchises, from Zelda to PokƩmon. These days I play a bit of everything but Nintendo and their unique creativity always keeps me coming back for more.

Nintendo’s Forgotten Franchises – Wave Race

Nintendo make wonderful games; I think if youā€™re reading this then thereā€™s every chance that you agree. However, if thereā€™s one criticism that I could aim at them itā€™s that they often play it too safe. Whilst the last five years have seen the release of two major new franchises (Splatoon and ARMS), the same five years has also seen the release of close to 30 Mario themed games across various platforms. Now, I love Mario as much as the next gamer, but Nintendo have a wealth of franchises which have been neglected, in some cases for generations and new entries are long overdue. In this series I will explore some of Nintendoā€™s forgotten franchises and just how they might return in the future, starting with Wave Race.

Let’s Play PokĆ©mon Red With Your Host… A Fish?!?!

The internet, a host to many weird and, sometimes, wonderful things. There’s keyboard playing cats, birds who hide in people’s cleavage, fainting goats and oh so much more. But I think I have just stumbled upon something that pretty much tops everything else… a Let’s Play stream hosted by a fish! Yes, that’s right, a fish, the aquatic animal which has fins, gills and swims through water.

Watch live video from FishPlaysPokemon on www.twitch.tv

The idea, though weird, is actually conducted in a very clever way. It looks like the brains behind the project has aimedĀ motion markers at certain points of the tank, so when the fish swims over the marker the button which it represents will be pressed.

What do you think of this project? What do you think is next? Maybe bumble-bee playing The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask?

I am a huge Nintendo fan, hence why NintyBuzz exists. I especially love all things Zelda and Metroid. NintyBuzz was started by me back in the Summer of 2014, it started out mainly as a hobby, though the site has gradually grown, and I hope it grows for many years to come!
